Daily digest - Monday, 14 January 2012

Well, I have had a busy day debating and writing about same sex marriage. Two articles have been posted (first, a letter to Andrew George MP, and the second a response to one of the commenters on the original thisiscornwall page). I am appalled that such bigots exist in my region, but perhaps, should not be surprised. Where Christianity exists, bigotry will follow. Go vote up my comments here.

There was also one of those 'lighter moments' pieces that the BBC runs occasionally. It would appear that the Queen's Bentley limousine wouldn't start when she came to leave church. It was a good job Bishop Cottrell was at hand to administer some divine vehicular maintenance.

After posting yesterday's Daily Digest, I considered the fact that - considering I don't post this until quite late in the day - perhaps the following day's tide times might be more useful to people. Done and done.

Atheism / Secularism Local /Cornwall

Faith-healing' fraud, Slovakian-born Dr Cathar – whose real name is Dagmar Ebster-Grosz, advised former non-Hodgkin lymphoma sufferer, Chris Geiger that only he could heal his cancer and that he needed to live a “pure” life.

Whist this is more a 'spiritual' form of bat-shittery as opposed to a religious form of bat-shittery, it does highlight the harm that people of this bent can do to people. Unless I am sorely mistaken, taking cabbage juice as a cure - or even as a treatment of any form - for cancer is utterly useless.

One wonders how many of these 'faith healers' die in agony because they actually act on their own advice? I never hear about them. Do you?

It is one thing to campaign on your own home turf against - or for - issues that you hold dear, but to go to another country to inflate the numbers of a protest in another country is just dishonest.

"Meanwhile evangelical Christians from Britain travelled to Paris yesterday to observe a mass protest by Christians and Muslims against President Francois Hollande’s plans for same-sex marriage in France."

Jack Chick writes the most grotesque 'cartoons' that show both Christianity and godlessness in the worst possible light.

How can this sort of propaganda convince anyone of anything, beyond uniting people against the message it is trying to portray?

Opponents of gay marriage take to streets of Cornwall

“Same sex marriage isn't about redefining marriage. It is about equality, and the institution of marriage has been distinctly anti-gay and gender-discriminatory for centuries. We simply don't live in a society where these divisions are tolerated any more.

There is a clear consensus within the UK that the churches are out of touch with the realities of modern-day society, and the numbers in favour of same sex marriage outweigh those against it. As such, I welcome Mr Harts battle-cry to contact your MP and let him/her know your feelings on the subject. I have done so, and if you want to see a copy of the letter I have written check my profile for my website. There is a link there that makes contacting them very simple.

Opponents of same sex marriage say it is divisive, but since when has the inclusion of people outside of a social division, been classified as divisive? It is time we moved on as a society, and embraced our differences.

Personally, I don't think any church should be forced to conduct same sex marriages against their will, but they will further ostracise themselves from society by doing so. It is their choice. Same sex marriage hurts no one, and I defy anyone to challenge me on that.”

Start saving – you might have home deposit in next 10 years

Housebuyers in the South West need a period of nine years and 11 months to save-up enough money for a deposit for a new home, according to the latest study from industry experts.

The region comes second only to London in the survey which has the longest wait of more than ten years counting the pennies.

"A meteorite which crashed to Earth earlier this year contains grains older than the solar system itself, according to scientists.

These rare and primitive space rocks, called carbonaceous chondrites, act as time capsules, providing astronomers with a window into the formation of the Sun and planets, four and a half billion years ago.

Carbonaceous chondrites also contain organic carbon molecules, materials that may be the precursors to life on Earth."

As part of my manifesto for the May 2013 elections, I hope to negotiate a ward-wide deal for solar panels to be installed to reduce our impact on the environment and our electricity bills. Those that are interested in the technology can go to the Cornwall Home Show and have a chat with the numerous solar companies that will be attending.

“If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.” 1 John 4:20-21 KJV

Comment: This is a curious verse. The grammar is all over the place, making it very hard reading, but I think what it is trying to say is 'if you love God, you must by definition love your brother'. Quite what the 'seen' and 'not seen' means, I don't know.

There is an underlying morality here that I like; to love all as you love the one you cherish most. I kind of like that. Unfortunately, without the establishment of such a god's existence, the verse's message is somewhat watered down.

I guess I engaged with it a bit. It made me think about my relationship with those close to me, but it has to be said, I do that anyway. I treat everyone equally (I hope), and have no need of a god to create a point of reference.
